UNDER 20 WOMEN ENTER WEEKEND TRAINING CAMP

A Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Under 20 squad moved into a residential training camp under head coach Dernelle Mascall which runs from March 16th-19th as preparations intensifies for the upcoming CONCACAF Women’s Under 20 qualifiers in Curacao.

Mascall has called up thirty one players with six overseas-based players and six players from Tobago making up the group. Nine players from the ongoing TTFA High Performance program are also in the mix.

Three practice games have been scheduled against visiting US outfit St Catherine’s University.

“It’s a good opportunity to assess the players available to vie for selection during this weekend camp. Six of the nine foreign based players are with us. We are really grateful for this camp as well as the three practice matches as it will serve as a good measuring tool for the staff,” Mascall told TTFA Media.

“We have the girls from the High Performance program who are excited to play as they bring that youthful energy and passion to the setup. They have also been engaged in a consistent training program over the past few months with the coaches at the HPP. There are also players from Tobago with the experience of playing in the the last CFU U-14 invitational and they are also very eager to be part of the squad for the Concacaf championship. The inclusion of Marley Walker is also a boost as she comes with a wealth of experience,” Mascall noted.

“We have the quality and passion and hopefully this camp will help to develop the cohesiveness in time for the tournament in April.”

Walker is a sophomore at James Island Charter High School in the US. She has been a member of the developmental program for the TTFA and played for Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF Women U-20 Championships in the Dominican Republic last year.

Following round robin play in the Concacaf qualifiers in April, the six group winners will advance to the 2023 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, joining the region’s top two ranked nations, United States and Mexico.

The 2023 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship is scheduled to take place May 24 – June 3, 2023, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The eight team competition will qualify its top three finishers (finalists and third place match winner) to next year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
