Women Warriors Rally from Two Down to Earn Vital Point in Honduras

The Trinidad and Tobago Senior Women’s National Team produced a determined second-half fightback to secure a valuable 2-2 draw with Honduras on Wednesday night in their Concacaf Women’s World Cup Qualifying encounter in Tegucigalpa.

After falling behind by two early goals, the Women Warriors showed resilience and character to claw their way back into the match and keep their hopes of advancing alive.

The hosts made a fast start, taking the lead in the 9th minute when Allyson Reed found the net before doubling Honduras’ advantage in the 21st minute, putting Trinidad and Tobago under early pressure.

Despite the setback, the visitors gradually settled into the match and were rewarded just before halftime. Kedie Johnson converted confidently from the penalty spot in the 41st minute after a Honduran handball inside the area, cutting the deficit to 2-1 heading into the break.

Trinidad and Tobago returned for the second half with renewed intent, pressing higher and applying sustained pressure on the Honduran defence in search of an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off late in the match when Nikita Gosine stepped up to convert a penalty in the 87th minute, calmly slotting home to secure a crucial point on the road.
Head Coach Damian Briggs praised the team’s resilience and commitment after the match, highlighting their ability to remain disciplined and continue executing the game plan despite the early setbacks.

“There were times when we stuck to our game plan. From a tactical standpoint, I thought we were good, and it was good for the players to see that even though they were two-nil down, they didn’t go away from the belief in how we wanted to play,” Briggs said.

The result means Trinidad and Tobago’s qualification hopes will now be decided in their final group match against El Salvador on April 18 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

With only the group winner advancing to the final round of Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifying, the equation for the Women Soca Warriors is straightforward — a victory at home will secure their passage to the next stage.

Briggs is hopeful that playing on home soil will provide an additional boost for his players as they prepare for the decisive encounter.

“We know what is at stake now. Playing at home gives us a great opportunity, and we’re looking forward to the support of the fans behind the team,” Briggs added.

The Women Warriors will now turn their focus to preparation for the crucial April fixture as they aim to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
