T&T to host Women’s 4-Nation ‘Jewels of the Caribbean’
The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) is pleased to announce the third edition of the Jewels of the Caribbean Women’s Tournament, showcasing rising football talent in the U-20 age category. This competition will serve as preparation for the upcoming CONCACAF Women’s Tournaments in January and February 2025, featuring the region’s brightest female players.
The confirmed teams participating this year include Dominica, Jamaica, St. Vincent, and two teams from Trinidad and Tobago. There will be two T&T teams involved, using the names Red Angels and White Angels with the T&T coaches Ayana Russell and Dernelle Mascall using the tournament to assess the pool of players towards selection of the Final Women’s U-20 Squad for Concacaf qualifiers next February.
The Jewels of the Caribbean Tournament is fast becoming a staple on the Caribbean football calendar, offering valuable competitive opportunities for women’s teams outside of CONCACAF and CFU-organized events. This year’s event has been made possible with the crucial support of Female Forward Sports, an NGO dedicated to empowering and supporting girls and women in sports. Through their assistance, the Tournament now proudly carries the backing of First Citizens Bank, as the titled sponsor. This is a partnership that the organizers hope to strengthen in the future to solidify this event as an annual fixture in December for women’s football.
Additionally, FIFA has stepped in to assist participating Member Associations (MAs) by covering key local expenses, including accommodation, meals, and internal transport. This support has eased the financial burden on teams and reinforced their commitment to the competition.
The Tournament kicks off on Sunday, December 15th, 2024, with an exciting doubleheader at the Larry Gomes Stadium. The first match will feature Jamaica against St. Vincent at 2:00 PM, followed by Trinidad and Tobago’s Women’s U20 Red team taking on Dominica at 4:00 PM. Matches will be held at both the Ato Boldon Stadium and Larry Gomes Stadium throughout the Tournament.
TTFA President Kieron Edwards stated, “This tournament is a tremendous step forward for women’s football in our region. This competition brings together the best talents from Dominica, Jamaica, St. Vincent, and our very own Trinidad and Tobago, showcasing the passion, skill, and dedication of our player. It underscores our commitment to elevating women’s football and providing opportunities for growth and development. We are excited to host this event, strengthen regional ties, and inspire the next generation of female footballers.”
The TTFA extends its gratitude to all partners and stakeholders for their continued support in creating opportunities to elevate women’s football in the Caribbean. Stay tuned for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of talent, competition and empowerment!
