T&T Start Gold Cup Quest AT DRV PNK
Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men begin their 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup quest with the second match in Group A against St Kitts/Nevis at 3:30pm today at the DRV PNK Stadium.
The Angus Eve-coached unit will be aiming for a bright start as the seek to get out of the group stage with a performance that sets the pace ahead of back to back matches against Jamaica and the US which played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.
“These guys have really shown their commitment. Extremely happy with the attitude in the camp and going out there we want to be committed in everything that we do.,” Eve told TTFA Media heading into the match.
“We want to represent our country right and we actually want to come out of this group. We believe we can. From a tactical standpoint and the individuals that we have on the squad, we believe that we have a good chance to do so.”
T&T have been on US soil since June 9th, defeating Guatemala 1-0 in a friendly in Philadelphia on June 11. The team has been based in Boca Raton, initially preparing for the Gold Cup prelims against Guadeloupe before gaining automatic qualification to the group stage of the Gold Cup after Nicaragua were expelled for fielding an ineligible player.
Give everything, give everything that you have for your country,” Eve said. “We are dedicating this to Clyde Leon. We watched a film on Clyde Leon the other day that we showed and the commitment that he had (was admirable). He has impacted a number of the guys here because he would have played with them, coached some of the (junior) elite players like Molik Khan who came through that programme…It was very heartfelt when we looked at how short his career was.”
T&T has won its last five matches against St Kitts/Nevis, the last being a 2-0 win in the 2022 World Cup qualifier in June, 2021. The biggest win was a 5-1 victory in the 2006 World Cup qualifying semi final round. The Kittitians, coached by Austin Huggins, are not expected to be pushovers as they are currently on a high following back to back wins in the prelims.
