T&T Advance to U-20 Knockout phase

Trinidad and Tobago secured a 3-0 victory over Suriname on Thursday at the Estadio Olimpico to book its place in the knockout stage of the Concacaf Men’s U-20 Championship in Honduras.

T&T, having finished third in its group will meet Costa Rica in the knockout round on Saturday from 12midday (2pm TT) at the Estadio Yankel Rosenthal, San Pedro Sula with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals to meet either United States or Nicaragua.

T&T did not get off to a dominant start and felt they should have gone ahead when skipper Molik Khan’s effort which went in was ruled out for handball in the 44th minute by Guatemalan referee by Ryan Lopez. VAR also did not do Khan’s men any favours.

Goalkeeper Tristan Edwards, coming in for Jahiem Wickham, made two decent stops to deny forward Dimitrio Andro and flanker Givon Derby in the 20th and 44th minutes.

Substitute Nathaniel James would impose himself on the opposition and pushed T&T ahead in the 63rd.His burst goalward ended with a powerful low shot from roughly 25 yards out. He then turned provider to help Khan get his first of the tournament with a neat finish inside the area in the 83rd.

T&T should have had more but had to settle only for a third item with a close range finish from James who now has four goals in the tournament.
