Briggs: We remain focused on El Salvador

As Trinidad and Tobago gear up for a decisive Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifier against El Salvador, Head Coach Damian Briggs has made one thing clear—his team will not be getting carried away.
Speaking at the TTFA’s Road to Qualifiers launch at Sip on the Avenue on Thursday night, Briggs emphasized a calm, grounded approach despite the high stakes surrounding the April 17 encounter at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

“It’s going good… the mood in the camp is really positive,” Briggs shared.

“We just want to remain humble, do our work like we’ve always done and get it done. The players are feeling good, and you can see it in the way they’re training—the enthusiasm is there.”

T&T enter the match knowing only a win will secure progression to the next round. This follows a creditable 2-2 draw away to Honduras last month which saw T&T come from two goals down to level it late in the encounter in Tegucigalpa. But for Briggs, the message to his players remains consistent.

“We’re not getting too carried away by it being a must-win,” he explained. “Every game we go into, we’re going to win—that’s the mindset. It’s no different. We just have to prepare properly, respect the opponent, and show what we have.”

Drawing on their previous outings in the campaign, Briggs pointed out that the team has already been navigating high-pressure situations.

“We knew what was required against Barbados, and even in Honduras, we understood what we needed to do. Nothing changes now—we know the task, and we just have to execute.”

The coach also stressed belief within the group, highlighting a fearless but respectful mentality.

“We respect every opponent, but we don’t fear anyone. We believe in ourselves, in our principles, and in how we want to play. The key is to stay calm so we can perform at our best.”

With expectations always surrounding national teams, Briggs was quick to dismiss any notion that his squad feels added pressure following the men’s campaign which ended last November after being filled with high expectations and fanfare.

“We’re not competing with the men—we support them. For us, it’s about doing our job and getting out of this group. That’s always been the focus.”

Briggs turned his attention to the importance of home support, calling on fans to play their part on match day.

“That 12th man is massive. Playing at home, we’d love for everyone to come out and support because we feel it. That energy lifts us and can help get us across the line.”

With a place in the final round on the line, the equation is simple for the Women Warriors—one game, one victory, one opportunity.
